Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus left Dhaka at 1:20 am on Tuesday (December 17) for Egypt to attend the D-8 Summit. The plane carrying him took off from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
The D-8 Summit is of special significance for Bangladesh. By participating in this summit, Bangladesh's commercial and economic relations with member states will be further strengthened. Deputy Press Secretary of the Chief Advisor Azad Majumdar said, "This summit will play an important role in the country's economic progress."
Dr. Muhammad Yunus is scheduled to hold sideline meetings with heads of government of several countries on the sidelines of the D-8 Summit. It is expected that these meetings will discuss global economy, trade cooperation and regional issues.
Earlier, on October 30, Egyptian Ambassador to Bangladesh Omar Fahmy invited Dr. to attend the D-8 Summit. Muhammad Yunus was presented with an invitation letter by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. The ambassador said that an important sideline meeting of the D-8 summit will discuss support for the Palestinians against Israeli aggression.
The D-8 group began its journey with the Istanbul Declaration on June 15, 1997. The main objectives of this group, established with the aim of increasing development cooperation among member countries, are: Strengthening the position of member countries in the global economy. Creating new trade opportunities. Active participation in international decision-making processes. Improving the quality of life of member countries.
The member countries of the D-8 are: Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey. It is reported that the heads of government of these countries will also be present at this summit.
The D-8 summit will be considered an important milestone in the diplomatic and economic progress of Bangladesh.
