Trump’s defense secretary nominee paid accuser but denies sexual assault, attorney says

President-elect Donald Trump's pick for defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, reached a settlement with a woman who accused him of sexual assault, which included a confidentiality clause, according to his attorney. Timothy Parlatore stated that Hegseth denies the allegations and describes the October 2017 incident in Monterey, California, as a "consensual sexual encounter."

Monterey city officials confirmed that a police investigation into the alleged sexual assault took place but declined to release detailed information about the victim or the full police report, citing state public records laws.

Hegseth has not faced any criminal charges or civil lawsuits related to the incident. Parlatore noted that Hegseth became aware in 2020 that the woman was considering legal action.
