Several of President-elect Donald Trump's cabinet nominees are under significant scrutiny due to misconduct allegations.
Pete Hegseth, nominee for defense secretary, is facing a sexual assault accusation from 2017, which he denies, stating that no charges were filed. Trump's prospective attorney general, Matt Gaetz, is also embroiled in an ethics investigation.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., nominated for health secretary, faces backlash for his skepticism about vaccines. Although the Senate, controlled by Republicans, will vote on these nominees when Trump takes office in January, they can expect rigorous questioning during bipartisan hearings.
On Friday, police confirmed that Hegseth had been investigated for an alleged sexual assault in California. A Fox News host and veteran, Hegseth stated he was never arrested and maintains that he did nothing wrong. A Trump spokesperson reiterated his denial of the allegations.
Additionally, CBS reported that Hegseth was previously flagged by military peers as a potential "insider threat" due to a tattoo perceived as associated with white supremacy. The tattoo, reading “Deus Vult” (Latin for "God wills it"), is linked to historical Christian crusaders. Retired Master Sgt. DeRicko Gaither shared his concerns about the tattoo's extremist ties with leadership. Hegseth has denied any affiliation with extremist groups.
