Syrian rebels take control of half of Aleppo, observers say

Rebel forces in Syria have reportedly seized control of approximately half of Aleppo, the country's second-largest city,

according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR). The ongoing offensive, which began on Wednesday, has resulted in the deaths of 277 individuals, including over 20 civilians. This marks the largest assault against the Syrian government in years and the first time since 2016 that rebels have reached Aleppo after being expelled by government forces.

Military sources have confirmed that Aleppo's airport and all access roads to the city are now closed. SOHR director Rami Abdel Rahman stated that the rebels captured this territory with little resistance, noting that "not a single shot was fired" as regime forces withdrew. Meanwhile, government troops have claimed to have regained ground in several towns within Aleppo and Idlib provinces following the offensive led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its allies.
